Smoking Policy

ALL of our Venues are non-smoking and non-vaping facilities. Employers do have the right to discipline you for smoking, vaping, and/or using marijuana products on their properties.

Smoking is not allowed within 25 feet of any entrance, window, or ventilation system of worksites and public places where smoking is prohibited.

Guests have complained to venues about entering through clouds of smoke.

Smokers do not get more or longer breaks.

DeVos Place Specific Guidelines:

ATTENTION: Smoking Ordinance Compliance and Designated Smoking Areas

This memo serves as a reminder of our obligations under the City of Grand Rapids Smoking Ordinance and outlines the designated smoking areas for the DeVos Place campus.

Grand Rapids Smoking Ordinance – Key Points

As of January 1, 2021, all city parks and playgrounds, including Lyon Square, are officially designated as smoke-free zones. The ordinance includes the following provisions:

Prohibited Activities in Parks and Public Spaces:
- Smoking, vaping, and the use of marijuana products are prohibited in all city parks, playgrounds, and recreational areas.
- Disposing of tobacco-related waste (e.g., cigarette butts) in these areas is also prohibited.
Building Entrances:
- Smoking is not allowed within 25 feet of any entrance, window, or ventilation system of worksites and public places where smoking is prohibited.
Marijuana Use:
- Use of marijuana products remains prohibited in public spaces per state law.

Lyon Square, adjacent to DeVos Place, is a designated city park and therefore entirely smoke- and vape-free.

DeVos Place Campus – Designated Smoking Areas

To comply with the ordinance and maintain a safe and respectful environment for all guests and employees, please adhere to the following designated smoking areas:

Cubby near Monroe Entrance (by bus stop)
- For guests of DeVos Place and Performance Hall only.
- Not permitted for ASM Global employees or contractors.
Space outside Monroe Meeting Rooms entrance
- Ash urn attached to street lamp.
- Permitted only for visiting guests from touring companies.
- Not permitted for IATSE stagehands or uniformed employees.
Riverwalk (sidewalk along west patio)
- Designated smoking area for all guests.
- Ash urns are located on lamp posts.
Michigan Street Sidewalk (outside dock doors)
- Designated smoking area for staff and contractors only.
- Ash urns are provided.
